Instagram is a social photo and video platform. Instagram is a fantastic platform for building relationships, growing a following, and funneling people toward your sales channels and other social media accounts to connect with you on. Because instagram is all about the photo and video, you’ll need to be very firm in who your ideal client is and who you’re speaking to.
Here are 5 basic tips about utilizing Instagram for direct sales!
Direct sellers need to be super mindful of how they’re using instagram. No one likes a spam bot, and graphics from your corporate company are not going to stop someone’s scroll or prompt someone to follow you, in fact it may do just the opposite- make someone unfollow. People don’t like to be directly sold to on IG, they really enjoy aesthetically pleasing content that you’ve created yourself!
1. Create your own content!
Whether its beautiful images of your product in use or in quirky flat lays, or its a lifestyle picture of you, creating your own content is important. Its especially important to get permission and credit the artist if you’ve use a graphic or photo that isn’t yours… no one likes a thief, so make sure you don’t scratch out someone’s watermark and claim the graphic as your own! People want to get to know you, so make sure to mix it up with plenty of lifetime.
2. Use all forms of Instagram with a good content mix
There are several content options on instagram. You have your feed, where your posts go. You have instagram stories/highlights which is more of a temporary content area (everything disappears within 24 hours, unless you add it to your highlights), and you have the newly introduced IGTV, where you can post videos up to 60 minutes. Your feed should be intentional, curated, and filled with your personality and branding. Your stories are a good place to share sales, but also should be full of non-sales content. IGTV currently has a ton of vloggers, but many of us truly haven’t discovered the potential with this platform yet.
3. Be selective about your feed
Your feed should NOT be filled with “buy this product” or “join my team” graphics. That’s the fastest way to get scrolled past and not gain any followers. Instead, think of it as a lifestyle channel for you to share your presence, your daily usage of your products, and your personality as a way to attract new customers. Make sure your images are crisp and clear, and that they look cohesive. This is where your BEST content goes – product flat lays, beautiful photos of you making banana bread with your kids, and scenic photos of your travels.
4. Maximize your bio
Your bio is a super important place to connect with your viewers. You can now link to other instagram accounts and use hashtags in your bio! I would also suggest using a landing page service such as tap.bio campsite, or linktr.ee. These landing places give you an option to direct your potential customers/followers to other social media platforms, your website. Campsite and linktr.ee are free, but tap.bio looks more professional and is more of a digital business card. I always suggest buying a domain redirect for your landing page because then you can use that website on business cards.
5. Use Hashtags Correctly
Hashtags are confusing for many people. On instagram, using a hashtag puts your photo in a feed with other photos. Many people will scroll through those hashtag feeds, liking and commenting on those posts. You want to find hashtags that have a good community and lots of people are looking through those photos. One good example is #momlife or #momblogger – I try to use hashtags that have 500,000-3 million posts because I know that those are active. You can check post counts when you start typing the hashtag, or download apps that help you find good hashtags to use. You can use up 30 hashtags per post.
