You’ve made a lot of decisions, the decision to jump into a new business, the decision to brand your business outside of your direct sales brand, and the decision of what company to be part of (or even the decision to go indie!). But now you’re haunted with the daunting task of naming your boutique. Some people find the naming of their boutique to just click one day – in fact, the name of my boutique came to me in a dream! (More about that later, ok?). But for some boutique owners, the naming of their boutique business is an anxiety-provoking, paralyzingly stressful experience.
Today I’m going to share two stories about business names and how they came to be, and I’m also going to share some memory joggers that may help you find something that lights up your whole world and makes you wake up with a pep in your step every workday. I am so grateful I found a boutique branding that does that for me!
Our first origin story is
about two cousins who decided to start a business together. They were both pregnant at the same time and wanted to start a clothing company that would be a solution that would intersect career flexibility and freedom in motherhood. In her pregnancy Christi had seriously considered Paisley for her baby girl’s name. Their family middle name was Raye, and it was a no-brainer. When Christi gave birth to her daughter, she realized that Paisley wasn’t the name that fit her, and instead chose another name. But what Ruth and Christi discovered later was that Paisley Raye, a women’s clothing direct sales company, was also being born at that time. The name was significant for the reason that it was meant to become the clothing company many know and love today.
Pro Tip #1
My first tip is to write down 5-10 words that mean something to you. They can be anything, even if it seems funny for a boutique name – brain dumps inspire creative sparks and you never know what could come out of it! From there, begin branching out on each of those words. Look up synonyms. Make little word trees and see if something magical happens.
Courage and Chaos Boutique is the women’s clothing boutique I own. I spend a long time trying to figure out what my boutique was going to be named. I knew the vibe I wanted – messy, authentic, brave, and openminded. Those are all the things my ideal client lived out in her life. But I couldn’t quite settle on something. I went from name to name before deciding that Closet Chaos would be the transitional name. I spent several months as Closet Chaos but felt like I was a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. The one night I had a vivid dream, I can’t remember the dream but I remember waking up and buying www.courageandchaos.com. And so it began. Courage and Chaos Boutique is a clothing company that serves women of all sizes seeking a safe place to learn how to live life as their authentic selves.
Pro Tip #2
Its okay if your first name is not “THE ONE”. Don’t settle – if it doesn’t feel right its ok that it is temporary. Keeping thinking on it – the right name will find you.
